About my art
I am very fortunate to live in the Arnside and Silverdale area. This quiet corner of the countryside straddles the border between Cumbria and Lancashire. It has stunning and varied scenery, estuary views and amazing wildlife.

I create art inspired by this natural world, the changing seasons and the ebb and flow of the tides.
Digital paintings
I create my digital paintings by hand using an iPad. I opt to paint in a very meticulous way. I like to work in extremely fine detail to create images that are almost, but not quite, photo-realistic. It is an incredibly slow process and each of my pictures can take up to 70 hours of patient work. I find it totally absorbing.
The starting point for each of my digital artworks is always a photo that I have taken. Elements of digital painting are like traditional art in that I choose the size of canvas, decide on composition and which details I want to emphasise or leave out. I then select the brushes to use and the colours to paint with.
The main difference from traditional painting is that it is all done on a computer screen. The canvas starts out as a transparent layer which I very gradually cover with opaque colour.
The original photo is discarded at the end of the process, leaving just the digital painting that I have created. Each and every brushstroke is done by hand and is visible upon close inspection - as can be seen in the following extract of “Winter At Leighton Moss”.

Sometimes I chose to paint with a bigger brush to create a slightly more impressionistic feel to my work. I still enjoy the ability of the digital software to “zoom in”. It means that an incredible level of fine detail can be achieved if desired. This is illustrated in the row of houses along the promenade which forms just a small section of “Low Tide At Arnside Pier” as shown below.

Watercolours
I have also been painting with watercolours for several years as an amateur artist. A selection from my recent portfolio is included within the WATERCOLOURS page of this website. I am learning to create art in other media and am always keen to try different materials and techniques. I exhibit each summer, along with other members of the Silverdale Art Group, as part of the Silverdale and Arnside Art Trail.

Award
My digital painting “Autumn At The Beech Circle In Silverdale” was shortlisted from thousands of entries for the British Art Prize 2023 run by Artists & Illustrators magazine. It was exhibited alongside the other prize winning pictures at gallery@oxo on the London Southbank. It was the first time I had entered an art competition and it was a proud moment for me. This endorsement by the art world gave me the confidence to set up this website and offer my digital paintings for sale. I hope you enjoy looking at my work.
